AN INTERVIEW WITH YVONNE MCGARVEY
Me: Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yvonne: Yes. I’ve been writing since I was six or seven years old. As a kid I wrote fantasy short stories. I was always a displaced Xena the Warrior Princess type trying to get back my kingdom. I remember my mom found a composition book of my stories and she showed it to family and friends. For some reason, I hid what I wrote, and she found the notebook in a drawer. As I got older, I kept journals, that’s where most of my inspiration comes from, from events and personal experiences.
Me: What inspired you pen down this book?
Yvonne: A friend of mine said I have five TV’s open in my head at all times. As an avid reader, I’m in the story when I read a book, and I know right away if a book is going to grab and engage me. Street Music is the type of book I like to read. It has a little bit of everything and then some. That’s why I wrote it.
Me: What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Yvonne: When I’m not writing I paint. I always cross pollinate writing and painting. Sometimes I do both at the same time. I’ve had art shows in New York’s Hells Kitchen, Jedite Gallery. I sold a few pieces too. It is pretty cool when I think my artwork is hanging in someone’s office or living room.
Me: Will you please tell us more about the storyline?
Yvonne: Street Music is a combination of some of my interests, such as Punk music, art, street life, and tattoos. The story combines all those things as well as a look into what holds us back from achieving what we want.
Me: What is the most difficult aspect of being an artist?
Yvonne: Time. Time is essential for me to create. I have been lucky to find a boss who allows me to work around my time to create. I wasn’t always so fortunate. That’s the reason why it took me most of my life to write Street Music.
Me: How do you intend to impact readers?
Yvonne: I don’t know if impact is the word I’d use. I would like whoever reads Street Music feel they got their money’s worth.
Me: Describe yourself in 3 words.
Yvonne: I’m determined, multidimensional and spontaneous.
Me: Are there any new projects underway?
Yvonne: I am currently writing the sequel to Street Music. The title is Battery Acid. The story picks up where the protagonists leave off and are now adults. I’m also working on new art pieces, which I may incorporate in Battery Acid. In between writing and painting I also knit. I’m attempting to knit my first sweater. I’ve got the hang of scarfs. Now I’m moving on to a more challenging project.
YVONNE MCGARVEY
I grew up in New York City, in Washington Heights. I lived all my life in Manhattan until I married Brendan. Currently my home is in Connecticut, although I travel extensively. I have twin daughters and they are the apple of my eye. I also have a black cat named Jacqueline who gets all the attention now that the girls are independent and out of the house. My family is everything to me.
My new book titled: Street Music. Available now at Amazon and Amazon EU. Street Music ( Book 1 ) is a fictional story based on experiences as an artist in New York City, and an extension of my art.
